The following is a list of African American authors and illustrators of children’s books. These books are in the JUVENILE LOCATION of the Houston Cole Library on the 5th Floor. Find the book with its CALL NUMBER by doing a title or author search in the HOUSTON COLE LIBRARY’S LIBRARY CATALOG.

  1. We are the Ship would be a fun one to do as a read aloud. You don’t have to read every word but use it as a discussion of a very interesting historical event. There’s a wonderful full-page spread of the World Series team. Pretty neat stuff.

  2. The Lion and the Mouse, though wordless, can be used as a read aloud. Watch the Jerry Pinkney video and think of the sights and sounds of Africa. Have the children make the sounds of the Serengeti. Discuss what it means to extend help and peace to those who seem more powerful to you or might even be your enemies.
